She Never Left the Marina

Kate Tolland kept herself between Greg and the open hatch while the first shock passed across the aft deck.
Her niece remained on both knees beside the broken seat-base panel, staring into the cramped compartment where Laura sat folded beneath them.
Kate had told Emma to calm down less than a minute earlier, and the memory now felt like another hand helping Greg pull the child away.
Kate had accepted Greg's authority because it offered an easy shape for the scene: an upset child, an impatient parent, and a missing woman.
Listening to Emma would have required Kate to challenge the man who owned the yacht while their relatives watched.
Kate could not ask Emma to make that cowardice feel forgivable.
Captain Mara crossed the deck, took control of the rescue, and moved Emma away from the splintered wood.
She kept the engines off and sent the deckhand to confirm every dock line remained secured.
Emma obeyed and moved beside Kate without reaching for the mallet again.
The deckhand lifted the loose cushion and broken section of the horizontal seat-base insert clear, then knelt at the metal hatch with rescue shears.
He supported Laura's hands, cut the binding, and loosened the tape while Captain Mara kept her from striking the low fiberglass ceiling.
Laura crawled to the opening because the three-foot compartment was too low to stand in, and the two adults lifted her onto the deck.
Kate wrapped a clean deck blanket around her sister before Laura's knees could give way.
Emma waited until Captain Mara cleared the broken area, then crossed the short distance and pressed herself against her mother.
Laura held her with shaking arms and did not release her.
Kate crouched near them, unable to make her apology smaller than what she had done.
“I told you to calm down when I should have listened.”
Emma looked at Kate with wet, exhausted eyes but offered neither forgiveness nor blame.
She simply turned back to Laura and rested her cheek against the blanket.
Kate stayed near enough to help without asking Emma to ease her shame.
Two relatives kept Greg near the cabin doorway while marina staff came down the dock, and nobody allowed him to approach Laura or Emma.
Kate did not ask her sister to explain the attack on the deck where Greg could hear her.
She checked only that Laura could breathe comfortably, that the restraints were gone, and that help was coming from the marina.
By Kate's count, Laura had been beneath the bench for about twenty-eight minutes.
After the argument, Kate had seen Laura step across the gangway onto the marina dock to steady herself.
Laura came back aboard minutes later, and Greg led her toward the stern before returning alone.
His claim that she had left exploited that brief absence, but Laura had never left the marina or abandoned her family.
As Captain Mara examined the open compartment, Laura slowly uncurled the fingers of her right hand.
A torn red tag lay crushed in her palm, damp with sweat and marked `DO NOT USE` in worn black letters.
Laura offered no explanation for where she had pulled it from, and Kate did not press her.
Near the hatch, a splinter from the fitted seat-base panel had peeled away from the metal rim.
Only the end of an embossed instruction was visible beneath it: `...KEEP CLEAR`.
Captain Mara looked at the fragment, then at the red tag, without offering a conclusion.
The deckhand stood a few feet away with both hands open, still shaken by Greg's command.
“He ordered the engines started before the passenger muster or head count, so we refused.”
Kate remembered the confusion on both crew members' faces and Greg's anger when neither moved.
Captain Mara guarded the open hatch while keeping everyone clear of the broken horizontal insert.
“This vessel had already been held dockside before the party began.”
She gave Kate no reason for that decision and returned her attention to keeping the deck safe.
Emma did not inspect the tag, question the crew, or return to the broken bench.
She stayed under the blanket with Laura while the adults secured the yacht and the marina response took over.
Laura finally lifted her head from Emma's hair.
“The yacht wasn't leaving with Emma aboard.”
Kate understood why Laura had come back, but she still did not know why Greg had hidden her beneath the bench.
